Netflix pulls out of Cannes Film Festival

Netflix has confirmed that it will be pulling out of the Cannes Film Festival.

It said it will not be taking any of its film projects to the festival after a rule change. Last year, the company attended the event with two of its films Bong Joon-ho’s ‘Okja’ and Noah Baumbach’s ‘The Meyerowitz Stories’. It was reported that French theatre chains had protested against the inclusion of these films due to their release date being 36 months, even though it differed to the Netflix day-on-date release.

In an interview with Variety, Netflix chief content officer, Ted Sarandos said, “There’s a risk in us going in this way and having our films and filmmakers treated disrespectfully at the festival. They’ve set the tone. I don’t think it would be good for us to be there. We loved the festival. We love the experience for our filmmakers and for film lovers. It’s just that the festival has chosen to celebrate distribution rather than the art of cinema.”
