Court asks novelist to make offer to Rakesh Roshan in ‘Krrish 3’ row

In 2016, a complaint had been filed against Rakesh Roshan by novelist Rupnarayan Sonkar, for copyright violation. But now the Supreme Court in New Delhi has now asked for Sonkar to give a reasonable offer for Roshan to settle.

Sonkar who claims that some of the scenes Roshan used in his blockbuster ‘Krrish 3’ (2013), were based on his novel ‘Suardaan’, which had been published in 2010. Reported on TNIE, A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra asked Roshan why he doesn’t just pay the amount Sonkar is asking for, since a charge sheet was filed against him.

Senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani who is representing Roshan, said that Sonkar has not given an offer for settlement. “First let the offer be made from the other side. If it is reasonable we would certainly look into it,” said Jethmalani.

Also on the bench, Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, have given till the 9th April to settle matters. “We expect that the respondent No 3 (Sonkar) shall put forth his claim which would be reasonable so that the petitioner (Roshan) can be asked to accept the same,” stated the bench.

It, however, clarified that the present order has been passed without prejudice to the points raised in the petition.

Roshan had moved the apex court against an Uttarakhand High Court order of July 20 last year which dismissed his plea seeking stay on his arrest in a case of alleged copyright violation. This was because a charge sheet had been filed.
