Hansal Mehta speaks out on harassment in Bollywood

As the sexual harassment allegations continue to rage in Hollywood across producers, directors and actors, the Bollywood industry also continues to battle its own demons. Filmmaker Hansal Mehta is the latest to speak out against the power play.

Mehta, who is a strong advocate of social issues, has raised his voice about the awareness of harassment and how it needs to be stopped at the root. “As an industry, we need to be aware that harassment in any form — sexual or mental — needs to be looked at very seriously. It never gets recognised. You have to recognise the harassment and nip it in the bud,” said the filmmaker as reported in HindustanTimes.

The National award-winning filmmaker also went onto say that change in attitude across all hierarchies and industries is needed to make sure those in power don’t abuse it. “Before Weinstein, didn’t we have cases? What happened to them? It’s a societal attitude that needs to change. For me, Weinstein case is blatant abuse of power and what goes unchecked. We have to understand that every sector has people who abuse power. Somebody perceives that they have power over you and they begin to bully and harass you. That harassment needs to be addressed, and people in power need to realise that they are crossing the line”, he finished.

As the voices in Bollywood continue to rise on this topic, could this be the start of change in the industry?
