Aamir Khan’s ‘Dangal’ wins ‘AACTA’ award

Aamir Khan’s ‘Dangal’ (2016) is still winning accolades and hearts worldwide. The film, which was based on the life of Haryana wrestler Mahavir Phogat and his daughters, received raving reviews critically and commercially. Now, the film has been awarded the ‘Best Asian Film’ title, at the seventh Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) awards.

Shabana Azmi, Anupam Kher, and Russel Crowe were among the jury. Both Azmi and Crowe excitedly tweeted about the film’s win. The Deccan Chronicle reports Azmi tweeting (@azmishabana), “Dangal wins Best Asian Film at AACTA. Congratulations team Dangal. With Russell Crowe, Chairman of the jury. It was a unanimous decision.”

Crowe also tweeted (@russellcrowe), “A huge task being the Grand Jury President for the inaugural @AACTA Asian Film award. 9 amazing nominees. Such an honor to be on the stage tonight announcing the Indian film #Dangal as the winner. A beautiful and empowering film, see it!! #Dangal. See it. You’ll know why.”

‘Dangal’ also starred Sakshi Tanwar, Sanya Malhotra, and Fatima Sana Shaikh.
