Sky News’ future in doubt to save Fox-Sky deal?

With the 21st Century Fox proposed deal to acquire Sky currently sitting with the Competition Markets Authority (CMA), the future of Sky News could be reviewed.

The broadcasting giant doesn’t want anything to come in the way of the £11.7bn bid, so questions will raise of Sky News’ position in the market. Media Guardian reports that the CMA said in its issues statement that if the deal was blocked, it would be assumed that Sky News remains competition against BBC, ITV and Channel 4.

Meanwhile, Sky released a statement through the publication saying, “The CMA should not simply assume the ‘continued provision of Sky News’ and its current contribution to plurality, ‘absent the transaction’.

“Sky would likely be prompted to review the position in the event that the continued provision of Sky News in its current form unduly impeded merger and/or other corporate opportunities available in relation to Sky’s broader business.”

The findings of the investigation by the authority are set to be published in December.
