Chandan Roy Sanyal feels early criticism of ‘JHMS’ led to poor performance

Chandan Roy Sanyal who played the character of Gas in ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ (2017), has spoken out about the disappointment over the film’s poor performance at the box office and how it has affected him.

Talking to the Hindustan Times, Sanyal said that negative reviews played a huge part. “It does bother me, simply because there were a lot of things at stake. The fact that people literally bad-mouthed the movie just two-three days after its release, led to the film’s poor performance. This bad-mouthing was the real reason, and it had a damaging impact on the film.”

Sanyal also said that he personally felt bad about the film doing badly. “You know for some one like me, who is an outsider — I have limited options. So, working with a filmmaker like Imtiaz Ali, and stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka, was a rare chance for me. So, you pull all your energy and you give more than your best, because you don’t get a chance like this again. That’s why it feels bad, that the film, you worked so hard for, didn’t do well, and no one will even notice my performance in that.”

Adding further, Sanyal feels that audiences should refrain from discussing the film on social media as it allows for spoilers. “It’s almost like someone has revealed the upcoming details of an episode of Game of Thrones. I mean you are spilling it out on the internet, and just like spoilers, people get affected by the reviews. I think people should, maybe, refrain themselves from voicing their opinions so early about a film, or maybe they should be less harsh about it.”
