Sony TV confirms abrupt end of ‘Pehredaar Piya Ki’

Sony Entertainment Television has confirmed that it has abruptly axed its controversial show ‘Pehredaar Piya Ki’.

The show did not air on Sony TV India on Monday 28th August, instead it was streamed on its digital service, Sony LIV. The collective decision was made by the makers of ‘Pehredaar Piya Ki’ and the channel itself.

‘Pehredaar Piya Ki’ has been embroiled in controversy for its storyline involving a ten-year old prince falling in love with a princess twice his age. A petition to pull the show off-air had been submitted to India’s media regulator, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The show was then directed by the BCCC (The Broadcasting Content Complaints Council) to move it out of the primetime slot to a later time.

In a statement, Sony TV said, “Effective from August 28 2017, we are pulling off our programme, Pehredaar Piya Ki, from television. While we understand that the decision to end this serial will be disappointing to those whose creative energies are vested in it, namely, its crew and cast, we (as a channel) are convinced that we will be better served by focusing instead on developing viewer interest in our upcoming shows. We are grateful to all the artists, producers and fans of our shows and request you to graciously support the viewership of our new ventures.”

The show starred Tejasswi Prakash, Afaan Khan and Suyyash Rai.
