Box Office: ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ bigger disappointment than ‘Tubelight’

In a surprise turn of events, Shah Rukh Khan’s latest film ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ has proved a disappointment at the box office in its opening weekend.

If reports are to be believed, the romantic film set in Europe, collected Rs. 30 crore in its two days of release, whilst ‘Tubelight’ earned Rs. 42 crore during the same period (with helping of Eid weekend). Both films were expected to take a much bigger opening at the ticket window due to their pull. However, King Khan’s ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ opening a lot less than what was expected. The film has taken a stupendous start in overseas markets, where Shah Rukh Khan has a huge following.

Trade analyst Komal Nahata told Mid-Day, “Both JHMS and Tubelight have turned out to be damp squibs at the box office. But, given that Tubelight was sold at a higher price, the loss that the distributors incurred would be more. It seems unlikely that the figures of JHMS will improve on Sunday and Monday.”

It remains to be seen if Raksha Bandhan today will salvage the film’s business, “Collections often take a jump during such festivals, but if the word of mouth is bad, holidays too can help only to a small extent.”

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh added, “One can expect better collections on Sunday and Monday. But the litmus test will start from Tuesday. A long inning is ruled out because the film primarily caters to multiplex-audience. But, there’s hope.”
