Shabana Azmi: Influenced by a legend

Elegant and vivacious Shabana Azmi feels that veteran actor Dilip Kumar has unknowingly influenced her life.

On the joyous occasion of Eid-al-Fitr, Azmi replied to Kumar’s Eid Mubarak tweet on Twitter and tweeted, “Eid Mubarak. Yusuf Saab. Hardly a day goes by when I don’t marvel at how unknowingly you have had an influence on my life.”

The handsome actor, whose first film ‘Jwar Bhata’ released in 1944, marked his entry into the Hindi film industry. Born as Muhammad Yusuf Khan in Peshawar (British India), later adopted the screen name Dilip Kumar.

He has worked in hit films such as ‘Mughal-E-Azam’ (1960), ‘Ganga Jamuna’ (1961), ‘Kranti’ (1981) and ‘Saudagar’ (1991).

Kumar was last seen on the silver screen in ‘Qila’ (1998). More recently in 2015, he has been honoured with Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award of the Republic of India.
