BizAsia Birthday Special: Madhuri Dixit turns 50

It is extremely hard to believe that the ‘dhak dhak girl’ is turning 50 this year. Over the years Madhuri Dixit has done some amazing films that have left an impact on the audience such as the 1992 film ‘Beta’ in which Dixit tries her best to save her marriage while her mother in law does all she can to destroy it. Films like ‘Dil’ (1990), ‘Mrityudand’ (1997), ‘Prem Granth’ (1996) saw Dixit bring alive some powerful characters onscreen.

To celebrate the 50th birthday of Dixit BizAsiaLive.com will look back at some of the breathtaking characters she has played in her films.

The starlet in ‘Tezaab’ (1988)
Forced into the limelight by her father Mohini (Dixit) leads a sad and lonely life. Her days go by waiting for the love of her life Munna (Anil Kapoor) to return from his exile and take her away from the life of misery that she is leading.

For the first time ever Dixit was nominated for the Filmfare Best Actress award. It was the song ek do teen that catapulted Dixit to success, even today when this song is played Dixit’s character Mohini instantly comes to mind.

The fearless police woman in ‘Khalnayak’ (1993)
Ganga (Dixit) is a tough police woman who has no time for nonsense. When it comes to her duty she is fearless and in love she is willing to do whatever is necessary to help Ram (Jackie Shroff) the man she loves.

Dixit had a significant role in the film in fact her role was just as crucial as Sanjay Dutt’s and Shroff. Her character goes undercover to try and capture a dangerous criminal and it is during these scenes the audience gets to see Dixit’s capabilities when it comes to acting.

The girl next door in ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!’ (1994)
Dixit’s expressions, her outfits and the songs from this film are memorable till date. Nisha (Dixit) is a big child at heart who loves her family especially her elder sister. When her sister’s marriage is arranged she ends up meeting the naughty but charming Prem (Salman Khan) who is the younger brother of her brother in law.

Dixit won the Filmfare Best Actress award for her role as the mischievous but caring Nisha.

The golden girl in ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ (1997)
Pooja (Dixit) has a caring nature and always thinks of others before she thinks of herself. She has a heart of gold and tries to spread happiness wherever she goes. Another thing about Pooja (Dixit) is that she is a big believer in love and that there is someone made for everyone.

Dixit’s character was full on romantic and had a passion for dancing. There is a scene where Dixit is doing some classical dancing that scene was a delight for many Dixit fans. Also the Nisha (Karisma Kapoor) vs Pooja (Dixit) dance off was a moment in film history.

The visionary in ‘Gulaab Gang’ (2014)
Dixit had done action in her films in the past but this film saw her explore this genre a lot more in depth. The role was of a woman named Rajjo who wanted to see change and was willing to do whatever it took for it to happen. Be it children or the elderly she wanted every female to get an education so that their lives could be improved.

Rajjo (Dixit) had a gang of young women who like herself wore pink sarees, the colour pink was what represented their gang. They were trained to use weapons to protect themselves and had a mission to help those females that were facing any injustices.

The independent woman in ‘Aaja Nachle’ (2007)
Dia (Dixit) is a strong, independent woman who as well as bringing up her daughter alone manages to handle her career as a choreographer too.

Dixit’s character Dia was strong minded in the sense that once she made a decision that was final she wouldn’t go back nor regret anything. Every situation that took place in her life was an experience that made her stronger. Dia (Dixit) lived her life on her own terms and there was no room for fear or for a man.

The dreamer in ‘Saajan’ (1991)
Pooja (Dixit) loved poetry and that too by Saagar (Sanjay Dutt). Dixit played the role of a dedicated fan who dreamt of the day she could actually meet her favourite poet. Such a time does come but she is unaware of what the reality really is.

Dixit played the love interest of both Salman Khan and Dutt in the film. It was a romantic film that displayed many themes like love, friendship and sacrifice. Dixit performed on many hit songs that are remembered even today such as dekha hai pehli bar and tu shayar hai.

The woman with vengeance in ‘Anjaam’ (1994)
Shivani (Dixit) is a beautiful young woman who works as an air hostess and lives with her sister and brother in law. A rich brat named Vijay (Shah Rukh Khan) falls for Shivani (Dixit) and even after she turns him down numerous times he fails to give up. Things take a nasty turn when Vijay’s (Khan) obsession to obtain Shivani (Dixit) creates havoc for her and for those around her. It was extraordinary to see how this young woman who loved life transforms into a revenge seeking machine.

It was a powerful performance by Dixit and she was nominated for the Filmfare Best Actress award.

The rebel in ‘Lajja’ (2001)
The film featured many big names such as Rekha, Manisha Koirala, Jackie Shroff and many more alongside Dixit. Dixit’s character was of Janki a theatre actress who lived a happy life unaware that the world around her was actually cruel and run by men.

Dixit’s character was bold and unafraid of the consequences. Her role raised many questions for the audience watching as to whether the rules are the same for men and women and would a man be able to make the same sacrifices that a woman would have to make. Dixit’s role in the film was appreciated so much that she was given the Zee Cine Award for Best Actress in a supporting role.

The silent lover in ‘Devdas’ (2002)
To the world she was a courtesan not worthy of respect but little did they know her soul was pure and her heart was filled with nothing but good intentions. Dixit did an exceptional role as the colourful Chandramukhi. The film also starred Aishwarya Rai Bachchan whose role was of Paro the love of Devdas (Shah Rukh Khan). This didn’t lessen the importance of Dixit’s role in fact as soon as she appears on screen she leaves the audience in a trance. Her acting was impeccable and she looked beautiful in the detailed outfits that were created for her.

The team at BizAsiaLive.com wishes the diva a very happy birthday!
