With the trailers causing huge excitement for all cinema goers, Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Sarkar 3’ is proving to be gathering momentum before it releases on Friday. Amit Sadh, who was appreciated in last year’s ‘Sultan’ is set to share screen space with none other than Amitabh Bachchan for the first time and with the ensemble cast also giving an exciting feel, it seems Sadh will be winning praise again.
BizAsiaLive.com recently caught up with Sadh who plays a pivotal role in third instalment of the ‘Sarkar’ franchise.
We spoke just after ‘Sultan’ (2016) and you couldn’t talk about any films you were currently in talks with back then. As you can reveal all now, how did ‘Sarkar 3’ come about?
I was driving home from the gym, and I get a message from Mr Ram Gopal Varma, just a short message saying, “Come to office. Need to talk.” So the next day I went and met with him and he just flat out told me, “Look I don’t know who you are, I’ve never seen any of your work, but Mr Amitabh Bachchan suggested your name for this part, and suggested that I should meet you.” And that’s how the whole goss started and eventually I got the film.
That’s amazing to have Mr Amitabh Bachchan recommend you.
I know how cool is that, right?
Your character is coming in at quite an interesting part of the ‘Sarkar’ franchise, did you have any apprehensions about joining the franchise in the third film?
Firstly when we were talking about my character in ‘Sarkar 3′, it was always there. I mean Chiku was in part one and then in two. In those he was a baby and now he’s grown up. Actually it’s strange for me to tell you right now, when I signed the film, for me as an actor the reaction is very alien to me; it’s very; like you like the film, you like the part, you like the filmmaker, you like the people. So I was excited that I’m doing ‘Sarkar 3’. I saw ‘Sarkar” when I was struggling to get a foothold in the film industry. I was really struggling and auditioning. And at that time I remember watching the film and I fell in love with the whole film like this. So I didn’t know that the audiences and the fans of ‘Sarkar’ are anticipating my character to grow up and come in. I’ve been witnessing each day since I signed the film, I shot the film, since the promos and now the film is about to release. Actually it’s then that I realised the importance of this character in the viewer’s mind, of the fans’ minds. So that’s really overwhelming, and to be honest for me it was very instinctive. There’s no apprehension, we’ve gained a lot, especially a film like ‘Sarkar’. And it has Amitabh Bachchan, Jackie Shroff, Manoj Bajpayee; it has all these great actors that you’ve admired. And then to be in a film with such actors and to have the kind of part that I have. It’s just a miracle in my life.
What was it like portraying such a volatile relationship between Sarkar and Chiku?
Well that’s the film. The relationship between grandfather -grandson is the film, and that world that he works in. That’s all I can say. It’s how an agreement between a grandfather and grandson should be.
How did you feel working with Mr Bachchan?
Now I get tongue tied. It’s been a great learning experience for me. Just being around him and seeing the passion, the dedication,the exuberance, the excitement, the intent that this man has for his work, for his craft. The understanding he has for his character, for the film. It’s been a great learning experience. I had so much fun to act, to be in the same frame of an actor with that calibre. With an actor that has that consciousness, that sensitivity. And I just need to say that when Mr Amitabh Bachchan stands in a frame and you’re in front of him, you automatically start doing better. So I hope I do more films with him.
Did you have to do much work to get into the skin of your character with working with director Ram Gopal Varma?
To be honest, no. For this film I didn’t because there’s already ‘Sarkar ‘ and ‘Sarkar 2’ (‘Sarkar Raj’) (2008). The way he (RGV) introduced me to the film, to the characters, to the mood of the film, to how my character is in the film… That is fixed in a film like this. He kind of set the mood and I think the way Amitabh Bachchan would come and be Subhash Nagre, I mean it is very easy because I when I play his grandson. I just basically in some manner am a reflection of his geology and of his DNA. I am his blood. I’ve just grown up watching him, idolising him. So for me it was easy, somewhere I am taking it as a reflection. That I am Subhash Nagre’s grandson so I didn’t have to do so much homework. I just had to watch him and become an extension of him.
The surprise element in the second trailer is that your character is in love with Yami’s (Gautam) character. If you can explain, is there a surprise element that’s not in the trailers?
Ya she’s my girl. See Ram Gopal Varma doesn’t make a typical love story and that’s a compliment to him. I mean take something like ‘Rangeela’ (1995) which was so beautiful and so rare. I mean this is a different genre. This is not your typical Bollywood love story. This is a film set in a main time, with a political scenario of power and concede, where there’s so much betrayal and questions of loyalty. It’s a conspiracy behind a conspiracy behind a conspiracy. It’s like ‘Inception’. I mean that’s the film, if I give too much I will be called up by Mr Ram Gopal Varma (laughs).
What do you think you took away from the character?
Well, in ‘Sarkar 1’, ‘Sarkar 2’ and’ Sarkar 3’ my grandfather, Subhash Nagre, is always saying “Yeh jo sahi lagta hai meh karta hoon” (what I feel right is what I do). If you see, in principal, in day to day life, that kind of statement sounds arrogant but it’s a very effective thought. So that saying for my character is something I have taken away.
There have been recent rumours that you have signed a couple more films with Ram Gopal Varma, can you give any comments on this?
I’m not going to say that I will never sign a film with Ram Gopal Varma. From the kind of respect, faith and the kind of relationship I have with him is that he just has to tell me when, where, what and I will be there. And I really hope that we get to do more films, because I really, really think he’s a genius and a great mentor. I have grown immensely as an actor being directed by him and just having an interaction with him day to day. So I can guarantee they’ll be more films with him.
‘Sarkar 3’ is set to hit the big screens on 12th May.
